How to Set up a Facebook Business Page the Right Way

1. Create your page:

The first step is to login to Facebook and create your page. Make sure if you are the business owner, that you use your personal account. Don’t get your intern to do it, because then they will own the business page. This can make things tricky if they leave your business. 

Once you’re logged in, click ‘Pages’ in the left-hand menu, and ‘+create new page’.

Then enter your business name, up to three categories, and a bio. You should see the Page Preview screen update in real time as you input information.

2. Add cover and profile photos

Next, you need to add your cover and profile photos for your business page. Your profile photo is the image that appears next to your business name on your Page. For example, you can use your business’ logo. Your cover photo stretches across the top of your page. 

Ensure that your photos are:

  • High resolution
  • The right size (170 x 170 pixels for the profile and 1640 x 856 for the cover)
  • Eye-catching and appealing
  • On-brand 

They should visually communicate your brand, products or team. For example, our Facebook cover image shows our team and our profile image is our logo. 

3. Add your details:

Now that you’ve created your page and added some images, it’s time to fill out your business’ details. This way, visitors can quickly find all the basic information they need to know about your company, including your address and service areas, website, contact information, opening hours, and rating. 

The easiest way to do this is to click the grey ‘Manage’ button near the top of your Page. Then scroll to the ‘Set Your Page up for Success’ menu on the following screen. To add details, simply expand the ‘Provide Info and Preferences’ section.

4. Add action button:

Next, you’ll want to add an action button to your page. This makes it much easier for customers to take an action like calling you, placing an order or booking a service. Having a clear and simple call to action is important for converting visitors into customers. 

Scroll to the bottom of the "Provide Info and Preferences" section that you were just working in. Click "Add Button". Then choose the action that suits your company best.

For example, you can ask your customers to get a quote, start an order, book a ticket, or request a trial. Make sure that your action is simple, direct and compelling.

5. Create your first post:

Before launching your page, you’ll need to create some engaging content to populate it. To create your first post, go to your page and click the box that asks "What's on your mind?" Then type your thoughts into the pop-up menu that appears. To make your post more memorable, consider adding an image, GIF, or feeling to it.

Create a few posts that will appeal to your target audience and inform them about your products or brand. You can also share thought-leadership content like blogs, whitepapers, and how-to-guides to establish your brand as an expert in your industry.

To do this, scroll to the bottom of the ‘Set up your Page for Success’ menu to the section called ‘Introduce your Page’. Then click on the ‘Invite Friends’ button. 

Once you have invited your friends, you can also create a welcome post for your page. This can help to build awareness and generate interest in your page. Make sure to also promote your page through your brand’s other social channels, website, and emails. Add ‘follow us’ to all your marketing material.
